Text to speech

Paste some text, pick a voice and language, and listen.

Voice

The voice is generated by your operating system, so there is no file to download: capturing it means recording your audio output.

Your operating system already ships synthetic voices: the ones the accessibility features and the assistants use. This page lists them all and puts them to work on whatever text you paste, at the rate and pitch you choose.

It is useful for reviewing a text by listening to it, which is the fastest way to catch sentences that do not flow; for practising pronunciation in a language you are learning; or for listening to a long article while doing something else.

Which voices you see depends on your system, not on this site. macOS and iOS ship high quality voices in many languages and let you download more from the accessibility settings; Windows and Android bring their own; and some browsers add cloud-served voices of their own.

How to use it

  1. 01 Type or paste the text you want to hear.
  2. 02 Pick a voice from the list. The language is shown next to the name.
  3. 03 Adjust rate and pitch if you need to.
  4. 04 Press Play. You can pause and resume at any point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download the audio?

Not from here: the voice is generated by your operating system as it plays and the browser gives no access to that audio as a file. Saving it would mean recording your system sound output.

Why do I only see a few voices?

Because those are the ones installed on your system. On macOS you can add more in Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content; on Windows in Settings, Time and language, Speech; and on Android in the text-to-speech settings.

Is there a length limit?

We do not impose one, but some browsers cut off very long texts. If it stops before the end, split it into parts.

Does it work offline?

With local system voices, yes. Some high quality voices are served from the browser vendor cloud and do need a connection.
